Student Activities

Life at school extends far beyond the classroom. Westboro Academy students have many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, develop leadership skills, and become engaged in a wide variety of experiences.

Before and After School Programs

Our Before and After School Programs have a reputation for excellence, convenience and quality. Westboro families enjoy having their children in our care, knowing they are in a safe, enriching and productive environment. The program can be used on an “as needed” or drop-in basis, making it cost effective and convenient for families.

The Before School Program: Daily from 7:30am-8:15am – $7.50 per use . Our Before School Program begins as early as 7:30am for families that get an early start. The children participate in inside activities until 8:15. The nature of these activities may vary depending on the participants but might typically include games, reading, Lego building and so on. The children then go outside for supervised free play from 8:15-8:45am.

After School Program: Daily from 3:45pm-5:30pm – $15 per use. The After School Program is available from the end of school at 3:45pm until 5:30pm when the school closes. After a snack, smaller groups (divided based on grade levels) rotate through a club time and activity time. Some of the clubs and activities offered in the After School Program in the past have included: Nature Club, Sports Club, Games Club, Chess Club, Swimming Lessons, Piano lessons, Tae Kwan Do lessons, Hockey, Maker Junior, Dance, Improv, and Lego Robotics.

Field Trips

Field trips form a critical component of the educational program at Westboro Academy. Field trips provide a framework for understanding curriculum covered in class, they enrich learning by providing “real-life” experiences for the students to relate to. Westboro Academy arranges that every class either participates in a field trip or receives a guest presentation each month. Some of the field trips our students participate in, over one year might include:

  • Performances at the National Arts Centre
  • Workshops at the Museum of Science and Technology
  • Presentations and exhibits at the Museum of Civiliza‍‍‍tion
  • Trips to Saunders Farm
  • The Pumpkin Run
  • Visits to the National Gallery
  • Workshops at the Museum of Nature
  • Ray’s Reptiles
  • Downhill skiing
  • Author presentations
  • Space Camp in Montreal
  • Pirate Ship Adventures

Athletics

Outside of the regular Physical Education Program, Westboro Academy students can be involved in a variety of athletic events. The philosophy for athletics is to encourage participation and a healthy lifestyle. The focus is on good sportsmanship, enthusiasm, determination and participation; not on performance. Westboro Academy belongs to the OISAA (Ottawa Independent Schools Athletic Association). Through this group, our students and their teams compete with other independent schools from across the city. In the past we have competed in soccer, hockey, basketball, track and field, and cross-country running.

Choir and Band

In addition to regular weekly music classes, students may opt for additional sessions for choir and band. There is a Junior Choir for students in grades 1-3 and a Senior Choir for Students in grades 4-6. Additionally, there is a concert band that meets twice a week that is for students in grades 6-8.
